Organizations that work with parents have a challenging job. Parents are busy. Finding a time that's convenient for them to attend an event, let alone one that deals with such a tough issue, can seem really difficult.
Organizations that succeed at reaching parents on this or any issue use a variety of approaches. They organize dynamic and engaging events at convenient times. They incorporate the topic into existing parent activities and programs. They send materials directly to parents through the mail, e-mail, a Web site, or at other community events and activities.
Whatever approach you take, the materials below can help you. They are designed to be used without changes or can be adapted to fit more closely with your community’s needs and organization’s style. We continue to develop new materials so check back often.
The Ready To Talk Workshop is designed to provide resources, tips, hands-on activities, and multimedia components that support parents who want to open up the lines of communication with their teen or pre-teen about sex. In addition to providing support materials for parents, the kit is designed to support you, the facilitator who will be giving the workshop. This kit is easy to follow and can be used "out of the box." Use it to support a standalone workshop or as part of an existing parent program. The "Ready to Talk" DVD also includes a segment just for workshop leaders that provides best practices and tips for running a successful workshop.
We also have events around the country that parents and trainers can attend to get more information and connect with other parents and trainers in your community.
